Veritas : Storage Exec 5.3
Automated Data Management :
FAQs
Q: What Is Storage Exec?
A: VERITAS Storage Exec™ helps organizations maximize storage resources
and reduce backup and restore times by providing automated storage
management. Storage Exec enables real-time storage quotas for individual
users, blocks non-business files such as MP3s and viruses from company
servers and provides extensive, detailed storage reporting. It reduces
administration through email notification that lets users clean
up their own files.

Q: What are the key benefits of VERITAS Storage
Exec?
A:§ Simple, Automated Data Management: Storage Exec is an easy-to-use,
automated technology that enables administrators to manage storage

with Backup Exec via Backup Exec™ SmartLink. This new integration
enables customers to back up or archive data from Storage Exec reports
using Backup Exec.
§ Reclaim Wasted Storage Space: Customers can reclaim as much as
30% to 50% of their Windows storage capacity simply by removing
unnecessary files that are currently wasting valuable disk space.
§ Reduce Storage Costs: Storage Exec helps increase the lifetime
and capacity of existing storage resources while reducing the amount
of IT workload dedicated to storage management.
§ Help Reduce Legal Exposure: Storage Exec helps ensure that illegal,
copy written, and offensive materials do not end up on company servers.

What are the benefits of using VERITAS Storage
Exec with VERITAS Backup Exec?
A:Storage Exec improves backup and recovery in several ways:
§ Understand which files do not need to be backed up or can be
deleted from a server
§ Reduce backup and recovery window (faster backups/restores)
§ Reduced network traffic (less data going over network to backup
server)
§ Reduced amount of data written to tape
§ Block unwanted file types from the server thus keeping data being
backed up to only critical information.
§ Windows administration only needs to be performed on business
related information, no private data
§ Limit the amount of data user can store on the server
§ Clear picture of the amount of data that has to be backed up
each day
§ Environments with stand-alone tape drives can understand when
they are reaching near capacity on cartridges
§ Reporting on files that have not been backed up
§ Highlight a data protection policy gap where files are not being
correctly protected, since being stored in wrong place or backup
policy is incorrect.

Q:Does VERITAS Storage Exec support DAS, NAS and
SAN?
A:Yes. Storage Exec works at the file system and drive level; therefore
Storage Exec can interrogate any devices that can be seen by a Windows
server whether it be connected via Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
or Storage Area Network (SAN) storage. Any Network Attached Storage
(NAS) built on these operating systems can be managed with Storage
Exec. Storage Exec Network Appliance Option works with Network Appliance
filers.

Q: Why is real-time enforcement of quotas and
file screening important?
A:Many competing products use "scan-and-dump" monitoring. These
products regularly read file systems at predetermined intervals,
reporting and managing files "after-the-fact". This doesn't reduce
storage allocations effectively as real-time quota enforcement and
file screening. This doesn't prevent out-of-space conditions that
bring services and applications down. Storage Exec is the only storage
management solution with patented TruStor™ real-time quota monitoring
and enforcement, enabling high availability of storage resources.
Storage Exec stops a file from touching the disk if that file is
deemed inappropriate or would exceed the quota maximum.

How can VERITAS Storage Exec help facilitate server
consolidation?
A: VERITAS Storage Exec typically helps customer reclaim up to
50% of utilized server disk space, drastically streamlining the
amount of data to be moved as part of server consolidation projects.
This reduces elapsed time and increases the probability of a successful
server consolidation. .

Q: Does VERITAS Storage Exec work in clustered
environments?
A: Yes. All versions of VERITAS Storage Exec are Microsoft cluster
aware and Microsoft cluster enabled. VERITAS Storage Exec was the
first independent SRM solution to receive IBM Cluster Proven certification.
VERITAS Storage Exec supports both active/passive and active/active
Microsoft cluster configurations. One license is required for each
node in a cluster. Space allocations and policy information are
stored on the shared cluster disk in a special file. Storage Exec
services are installed on both nodes of the cluster and access the
same special files for quota management and file screening. In the
event of a failover, the cluster service on the secondary node detects
the failure and issues a mount request for the shared cluster drives.
Storage Exec detects this mount request and begins managing the
space allocations on the drive after it comes online.
